| Is your toilet tank running ? Is your toilet fill valve working overtime and not shutting off? Is your toilet leaking? Does your toilet flush slow? Here are some simple steps on how to fix a toilet: If your toilet is running your flapper needs replaced or the chain between the toilet handle and the flapper is stuck under the flapper. There are different types of flappers, but the standard toilet type is made of rubber and located in the center of the toilet tank. Over time the flapper is letting water leak into the toilet bowl. This lowers the water level in the toilet tank causing the fill valve to add water to replace what leaked into the toilet bowl. The fill valve continuing to run coined the phrase “ running toilet”. If you have any further questions please use our “ Ask Jason” link. If your toilet fill valve is not shutting off it either has trash in the diaphragm, the toilet float is stuck, or the toilet fill valve is simply worn out and needs replaced. If your toilet is leaking around the base your toilet bowl wax ring needs replaced. Toilet must be pulled and new toilet bowl wax ring installed and toilet reset. If you toilet is leaking between the toilet tank and the toilet bowl you might simply tighten the tank bolts or the foam spud gasket needs replaced . If your toilet flushes slow there might be an obstruction in the toilet bowl p-trap or your house sewer could be partially or fully stopped up. If all other fixtures in the bathroom are draining good, the problem is in your toilet. You can start with a plunger and try to push the obstruction out of the toilet, if that doesn't work, you can run a toilet auger through it. If your house sewer is stopped up, I suggest that you have your main sewer line rodded or cleaned all mthe way out to the city sewer main or your septic tank, whichever you have. This can be done by the do- it-yourselfer or it may be time to call your favorite plumber. Sewer machines can be rented at your local equipment rental stores, but be careful with them as they can be dangerous to use. As with everything, there are most certainly other repair issues for toilets. | Tankless water heaters are becoming more and more popular. I can say from experience that a gas tankless water heater is by far the better choice. It still amazes me even as a plumber how these units will put out a continuous feed of hot water for as long as you like. There are electric tankless water heaters, but in my opinion they are not practical from an energy standpoint. Gas on the other hand is another story. It doesn't matter if you have natural gas or propane, they work wonderfully. If you are in the situation of electric being your only choice, than I suggest a Rheem Marathon water heater. The Marathon has a lifetime warranty on the tank and Rheem is a great choice of water heater no matter what type you use( Gas or electric). The Rheem Marathon water heater has a plastic tank that does not have the problems of corrosion. Just a few thoughts from Your Plumber!!
